Starting Year 7

Congratulations on your child starting Year 7!

The transition to senior school is an exciting milestone with a very busy first year.

For those of you experiencing this for the first time, or if your child is attending a different school from an older sibling, here's some advice about what to expect:

Schools place a significant emphasis on pastoral care, induction, and co-curricular involvement during these first three terms.

🍂 Autumn Term: Settling In & Induction (September – December)

  • Early September (Induction Day): Year 7 students usually start one day before the rest of the school. They meet their form tutor, practice using lockers, receive timetables, and set up school devices.

  • Mid-September (Parents' Welcome Social): An informal evening for parents to meet the Head, Form Tutors, and other Year 7 parents over drinks.

  • Late September ("Meet the Tutor" Evening): A brief, formal check-in to discuss how your child is settling socially and handling the logistics of senior school.

  • Early October (Co-Curricular Fair): Students sign up for clubs (e.g., robotics, debating, sports, music).

  • Late October (Two-Week Half-Term): A vital rest period. School terms are intense, and Year 7 students are usually exhausted by this point.

  • Late November (First Grade Card): A short tracking report focusing on "Effort" and "Attitude to Learning" rather than hard academic grades.

  • Mid-December (Carol Services & Term End): Traditional festive services, house music competitions, and a welcome finish ahead of the Christmas holidays.

❄️ Spring Term: Finding Momentum (January – March)

  • Early January (Term Starts): Routine resumes quickly. Academic expectations step up as the initial settling-in period ends.

  • Late January / February (Full Parents' Evening): Your first formal opportunity to speak to every individual subject teacher about academic progress.

  • Mid-February (One Week Half-Term): A shorter winter break.

  • March (Spring Reports): Full written reports are published, detailing strengths and specific areas for academic growth.

☀️ Summer Term: Exams & Celebration (April – July)

  • Mid-April (Term Starts): Shift to summer sports kit.

  • May (Internal Exam Preparation): Tutors guide students on how to revise. This is about learning how to sit senior school exams rather than high-stakes testing.

  • Late May (One-Week Half-Term): Revision break before internal exams.

  • Early June (Year 7 Exam Week): Formal internal exams held in classrooms or the main exam hall to build familiarity with the environment.

  • Late June (Residential Trips & Team Building): Often a week-long outdoor adventure camp (e.g., Bushcraft or outward-bound trips) to solidify friendships.

  • Early July (Sports Day & Prize Giving): Major whole-school events. Parents are often encouraged to attend Speech Day or Prize Giving before the summer holidays begin. Parents of children in Years 7 and 8 may attend, but older children and teenagers tend not to expect/want their parents to be there - depending on the child, of course!

*This is a general outline of the first academic year for Year 7 pupils; it will, of course, vary according to different schools.
